Hublot as a brand is one to never shy away from a challenge. Whether it’s using the latest technologies to innovate new materials or perform the seemingly impossible with all sapphire timepieces that include minimalistic movements, Hublot is the master of whatever they put their mind to, they create. This is no different with their Big Bang Unico Summer timepiece.
This piece was created from a vision of what summer would be like if it were to be summed up into a single colour and worn on the wrist. The brand stated that “It is the dazzling blues that nature creates, transformed by the summer light, and so hypnotic that they seem unique and impossible to reproduce, that we would most like to bring back with us.”
Hublot CEO, Ricardo Guadalupe explains the reason behind this piece by stating that “What I love most when travelling is the amazement of the return, wrote Stendhal. This enchantment of the journey that we bring back with us transforms us a little, for the better. And even if daily life has not really changed on our return, our eyes being open to other horizons is enough to lend it a new colour. Right from its beginnings, Hublot has adopted a future-focused approach to watchmaking, sparking trends through the many patents it has filed for its innovations. The Big Bang Unico Summer embodies the beauty of our summer experiences. We wanted to give you another shade for this year, to let you relive these magic moments any time you want.”
Design:
The Hublot Big Bang Unico Summer comes with a 42mm case, which has gone through a special process to achieve the desired colour. The process of anodisation was used on the aluminium case, which in turn gives the case this beautiful pastel shade of turquoise blue colour. As the case is rotated under light, the case shimmers with its satin and polished finishes. The process of anodisation guarantees the longevity of the case while also protecting it from scratches and impacts. The use of aluminium as the case material also means that it is lightweight, making it comfortable to wear on the wrist.
Hublot has used an open-worked dial showing as much of the movement underneath as possible, with the only covered section being the 60-minute counter at 3 o’clock. The hands, hour indices, and minute track are all in matt turquoise finish to match the rest of the watch. To add some colour variation, the hands hour markers are filled with white superluminova, with the disc on the date window also being done in white. The markings on the counters can be somewhat subdued as the white blends in with the turquoise background.
Two strap choices are available for the Big Bang Unico Summer. Firstly the standard velcro strap in Turquoise Knit, with matching turquoise stitching. It comes with a polished turquoise anodised aluminium sports buckle that has the words “HUBLOT” engraved into it and is filled with white lacquer. The second option is a Turquoise rubber strap, which has a titanium deployment buckle with a satin-finished decorative plate in turquoise anodised aluminium, also with HUBLOT engraving.
Movement:
The engine behind this piece is the UNICO manufacture calibre (HUB1280) movement, which features an oscillating seconds clutch, a chronograph friction system with ball-bearing adjustment, and also a column wheel.
This self-winding movement operates at a frequency of 4hz (28, 800 VpH) and gives out a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. The movement can be seen through the case back through the sapphire crystal. The case back also features the engraving “LIMITED EDITION”.
The Hublot Big Bang Unico Summer limited edition is available only in 200 pieces and can be purchased through the brand’s e-commerce website and in the Mediterranean boutiques in Capri, Forte Dei Marmi, Mykonos, Ibiza, Bodrum, Saint-Tropez, and Monaco.
