by WatchAdvice

Just a few days ago we witnessed the Phillips Hong Kong watch auction: XII. while there was not a listing we would say no to. There were some vintage pieces that exceeded all estimations and went for some insane prices.  Here are our picks for the most interesting vintage piece that went for an above estimate and rightfully so. All prices have been converted to Australian dollars using the current exchange rate at the time of writing.

Number 1: Lot 837

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar ref: 255545BA.

Produced in 1986 This Beautiful 39mm Royal oak is a very early production reference for the automatic Perpetual calendar Royal Oak. Only 279 examples of this reference were produced, most in yellow gold, a small number in stainless steel and only one in platinum. The piece seen here is the only known example with a black dial and applied gold print. Also sporting the smaller Brand name Font on the moon phase, only found on early production pieces. This lot was also complemented by a certificate of origin and extract from the register. With a price estimate of $130,000 – $260,000 this piece was sold at an eye-watering $545,500.

Number 2: Lot 852

Patek Philippe grand complication Ref: 3974R

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Maison Patek Philippe launched the reference 3974. Produced in 1989 as the brands first serially produced automatic perpetual calendar, minute repeater, one of the most complicated wristwatches of the time. The only predecessors of this piece are the ref. 541 produced in 1939 and ref. 3621 produced in 1988, both one of a kind pieces made for Mr Philippe Stern, a real power move. The piece that was on offer is one of only 5 publically known pieces cased in pink gold. Produced by legendary case maker Jean-Pierre Hagmann, still showcasing the JHP seal, absolutely a draw for collectors. With an estimated price between $645,000 and $1,290,000 it sored above selling at $1,550,000, accompanied with the original certificate, additional sealed case back and complete accessories

Number 3: Lot 1036

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference: 6265

In no surprise, a Daytona has made the list with this beautiful 1983 ‘Big Red’ stainless steel example. First released in 1971 the ref 6265 was the last Daytona to feature a manual wind movement and 37mm case size. With a beautiful white dial and the famed large red font Daytona, this piece utilises the legendary Valjoux 727 beating at 21,600 vph compared to the previous 722 beating at 18,000 vph. This example is presenting all period correct parts and a well-preserved dial. Accompanied by full box and papers including outer packaging.

Overall a major success with Phillips Hong Kong watch auction with some beautiful pieces and amazing prices. We at Watch advice are very excited to see the upcoming auction for the horological society of New York as well.
