Ulysse Nardin Diver Lemon Shark Revealed

by Chamath Gamage

There are a handful of watch manufacturers out there that not only create exceptional timepieces but also help to create a better environment for future generations. Ulysse Nardin is one of these manufactures that have been continually aiming to restore or fight against pollution, whether it’s working with foundations or through the use of sustainable materials on their watches.

Now, the Swiss watchmaker is pledging its efforts to reduce marine pollution by integrating materials culled from the ocean whenever possible into new watches. This is done through recycling discarded fishing nets into watch bands while also improving oceanographic knowledge, with the focus being on sharks.

Ulysse Nardin believes that sharks are largely a misunderstood species, and through this latest timepiece, they want to bring knowledge and awareness to these apex predators. In particular, this latest model is focused on Lemon sharks. Lemon sharks are based mainly in Florida, and they feed on fish and crustaceans. They received the name “lemon” due to their yellow colour, which when combined with the sandy ocean floors they inhabit, can be used as camouflage to attack their prey.

Patrick Pruniaux, CEO of Ulysse Nardin believes that “Sharks are largely misjudged to be dangerous to humans, which are not their natural prey. We and OCEARCH believe in education. The more informed the public is about these magnificent creatures, the more they will respect their place in the natural hierarchy of the oceans.”

In celebrating the launch of the Diver Lemon Shark on World Ocean Day, Ulysse Nardin has paired up with OcEARCH and FIU Medina Aquarius Program in the Florida International University Institute of Environment. OCEARCH is a nonprofit organization that helps scientists collect and access previously unattainable data in the ocean. Ulysse Nardin and OCEARCH started working together back in June 2020.

FIU’s Medina Aquaris Program includes a Reef Base, which is the world’s only underwater research and education laboratory. This incredible underwater lab is a significant asset that provides unparalleled means to study the ocean.
