Oris has history of creating limited edition watches which pay tribute to artists and influential individuals and in turn raise awareness. Over the past decade, Oris has worked with non-profit environmental organisations and clean-up movements all over the world. In 2021 Oris has developed a timepiece created in conjunction with the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat and its mission to conserve the Wadden Sea, the world’s largest tidal system and a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Introducing Oris Dat Watt Limited Edition. Based on the Oris Aquis diver’s watch, the Dat Watt Limited Edition is named after a local dialect for the Wadden Sea. The 2,009 pieces mark the year the Wadden Sea was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Oris’s Change for the Better projects have covered the globe. Oris has worked with Movember, the Carl Brashear Foundation and most recently begun a partnership with the Roberto Clemente Foundation. Each works to change lives and has a proven track record doing so. Now the focus falls on the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To understand this watch, its important to understand what Wadden Sea is and its importance, it is this awareness that Oris is aiming to raise with its Oris Dat Watt Limited Edition watch.
The Wadden Sea
The Wadden Sea covers an area of 11,500km 2 , has a 500km coastline and is a vital stopping point for more than 10 million migratory birds every year. At eye level, it is not always easy to appreciate the scale and beauty of the Wadden Sea, the largest unbroken tidal flat and barrier-island depositional system in the world. Covering 11,500km2 in the North Sea, it is largely flat. From above, its complexity and natural beauty come into spectacular focus. It’s also from the air that the transition from salt marshes to marine and brackish areas becomes clear. But even then, much of its value and importance remains hidden. The Wadden Sea is hugely biodiverse. At any one time, there are more than 6 million birds inside its borders. Each year, between 10 and 12 million migratory birds pass through it. The salt marshes host around 2,300 species of flora and fauna, and there are a further 2,700 species in the marine and brackish areas, and more than 30 species of breeding birds.
What is the CWSS
The story begins in 1978, when Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands began cooperating to protect the Wadden Sea as an ecological entity and formed the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation. The CWSS was founded in 1987 and has been tasked with delivering all kinds of goals that support the Wadden Sea’s natural and sustainable ecosystem. Mr. Bearends, the executive secretary and head of the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS) who lives in the city of Groningen, in the northern part of the Netherlands, 30km from the Wadden Sea is responsible to make sure the tasks given to the CWSS are done properly. The Wadden Sea is recognised as being of global importance for the conservation of biodiversity and ecological and geological processes that still proceed mostly naturally.
The Watch
The Oris Dat Watt Limited Edition comes in multi-piece stainless steel case and has a uni-directional rotating bezel. It measures 43.50 mm in diameter and is accompanied by stainless steel bracelet. The dial is a blue/grey gradient with its hands and indices filled with Super-LumiNova. The top glass is Sapphire crystal doomed on both sides with anti-reflective coating on the inside. The watch is water resistant to 30bar or 300m in case if you want to go diving wearing it. The case back is stainless steel with special engravings which mentions the number of the watch.
The Dat Wat Limited Edition is powered by the inhouse Oris 761 automatic movement which has 38 hours of power reserve. The Dat Watt Limited Edition is a special watch. Its dial displays the lunar cycle and tidal range in the Northern Hemisphere via the Oris-developed Pointer Moon function, created for professional divers. This works using a central white pointer hand that once aligned with the correct day in the 29.5-day lunar cycle, shows the corresponding tidal range via the white outline on the dial. The same hand indicates the waxing and waning of the moon. The watch comes in a special presentation box which is synonymous with its previous limited-edition offerings.
