2021 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver 42 MM

by Chamath Gamage

Audemars Piguet has just released three new Royal Oak Offshore Divers models in stainless steel. Offered in three different colours to suit different tastes, and a new calibre movement that packs a punch, the new Royal Oak Offshore Divers timepieces are designed and built to be fit for in and out of water.

Since the first Royal Oak Offshore Diver (named Royal Oak Offshore Scuba at the time) was released back in 2005, the watch has had many different and vibrant dial colours with matching straps, to certainly make it one of the more stylish diver’s watch on the market. Combine the aesthetic looks of the model with the pioneering case materials and combinations that have been inspired by diving equipment, and what you are left with is an all-time favourite for the spirited adventurer.

Design:

The all-new Royal Oak Offshore Diver models all come in a 42mm stainless steel casing, with the difference between the models being the finishing of the crowns. The three Royal Oak Offshore Diver models are the Trailblazing Khaki, Navy Blue, and the Pristine Grey. The khaki model comes with the two crowns at the 3 o’clock and 10 o’clock position finished in black ceramic. These two crowns have 18-carat pink gold finishing, which matches the khaki model’s 18-carat pink gold hour markers and hands on the dial. The “Méga-Tapisserie” dial is finished in khaki, which against the satin-brushed and polished surfaces of the stainless steel case stands out quite beautifully.

Another feature that stands out when compared to the other two models on the “Trailblazing Khaki”, is the beige 15-minute zone on the black rotating diving scale ring. The watch comes with a khaki strap which when paired with the dial gives off the look that it’s made to be in the outdoors. The new models feature a new innovative interchangeable strap system, which has been designed by Audemars Piguet exclusively for this new collection!

The navy blue model was designed in a way to give off the feeling of being a subaquatic functional accessory. The navy blue “Méga-Tapisserie” dial has contrasting 18-carat white gold hour-markers and hands. The 15-minute zone on the rotating bezel is donned in white, which matches the luminescent coating on the hands and hour markers nicely. Like the khaki model, the 10 o’clock and 3 o’clock crowns are made from black ceramic. The navy blue model is the timepiece out of the three that seems to contrast the most, with the black diving scale against the white and the blue dial against the white hour markers.

Lastly, we have the Pristine Grey model. The more elegant and classier of the three models, the Pristine Grey has a timeless design. The two crowns are made from grey ceramic which complements the stainless steel case nicely. This is the only model out of the three where the “Méga-Tapisserie” dial colour matches the crowns. Although the grey dial can seem a little subdued, there’s no issue with the readability as the luminescent coating on the hours and hands still make them stand out. The diving scale on this model is blue, with contrasting white Arabic numerals and a white 15-minute zone. The grey rubber strap compliments this piece very nicely and finishes off the classy look to it.

Movement:

All three models come with Audemars Piguet’s all-new Calibre 4308 movement. The Calibre 4308 features a second and instant-jump date indicator (3 o’clock position). The diving scale that’s featured on the dial is activated with a unidirectional click mechanism which is linked directly to the 10 o’clock crown. the Calibre 4308 movement has a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 VpH) and can produce a power reserve of approximately 60h.

All three timepieces come with an open case-back, which reveals the inner beauty of the Calibre 4308 movement, from the “Côtes de Genève,” “traits tirés” and circular graining, to the new dedicated oscillating weight in blackened 22-carat pink gold.

Stylish yet an essential functional tool for diving, the all-new Royal Oak Offshore Diver’s collection by Audemars Piguet sees the brand release some great colours made for adventuring in the outdoors, aquatic, or something a little more elegant.
