Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon

by Chamath Gamage

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Ultra Thin collection gets the latest addition with the brand’s new Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon timepiece. This was a first for the Maison, as it brings together two complications that is loved in horology, a moon phase and tourbillon. Jaeger-LeCoultre has also added their signature jumping date into the mix of these two complications.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has a long-standing history with tourbillons, with the Maison winning prizes and accolades for their tourbillon complications. In 2009, the manufacture introduced the Master Tourbillon which came with the Calibre 978 movement, which won the International Chronometry Prize organised by the Horological Museum of Le Locle, Switzerland. This Calibre 978 movement has been Jaeger-LeCoultre’s tourbillon mainstay since its introduction, and only in 2019 did the brand give the calibre a comprehensive update.

Like all of the timepieces released by Jaeger-LeCoultre, the Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon comes with the brands 1,000 Hours Control certification, which is undoubtedly one of the watch industries toughest testing procedures. Along with the 1,000 Hours Control Certification, the Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon also comes with a hefty eight-year warranty.

Design:

The Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon comes in a 41.5mm Le Grand Rose gold case, which has only been introduced this year by the brand. The Le Grand Rose gold is a pink gold alloy that has remarkable sheen and depth of colour, which is also highly resistant to fading over time. The case is finished with it being fully polished, has beautiful elongated and bevelled lugs alongside a bezel that’s sloping outwards. All these design codes are part of the Master Ultra Thin collection.

The dial is just as refined and stylish as the case that surrounds it. The applied golden hour indexes are elongated arrow-shaped which is complimented nicely by the Dauphine hour and minute hands. Against the eggshell white backdrop, the golden indexes and hands stand out beautifully. The dial background also serves the purpose of letting the tourbillon and moon phase display take the limelight.

At the 12 o’clock position, the astronomical complication shows the Northern Hemisphere moon phases, which is surrounded by a ring with applied Southern Hemisphere moon phases on the left and the Age of the Moon on the right, which is each indicated by a double-ended hand. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s signature date display is shown on the outer ring of the dial, which is indicated by a third hand with red Jaeger-LeCoultre anchor pointer.

The lower half of the dial, precisely at 6 o’clock is taken over by the tourbillon. Jaeger-LeCoultre has given the tourbillon a newly designed polished pink gold bridge which secures the titanium tourbillon cage, as the tourbillon completes one revolution every 60 seconds.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has used the Calibre 983 movement in the new Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon. The engineers used the previous 978 movement to develop this new calibre 983, while also giving it the addition of the moon phase and ‘jumping’ date complication. The Calibre 983 movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 VpH (4 Hz) while offering a power reserve of approximately 45 hours.

WatchAdvice Thoughts:

Jaeger-LeCoultre has produced a first for the brand with the Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon as they bring together two complications that the brand hasn’t combined before. This new timepiece is as elegant and refined as the complex mechanisms that make it. Seeing the astronomical complication alongside the tourbillon makes the dial very aesthetically appealing. At a case size of 41mm, the watch isn’t too big either and can be perfectly suited for a more dressy appearance. With the Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon coming with an eight-year warranty and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 1,000 hours control certification, this timepiece certainly ticks all the boxes. You would be hard-pressed to find a watch with the looks and movement to match.
