H.Moser & Cie – The Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept Blue Lagoon Review

by Chamath Gamage

H. Moser & Cie are well known as a creator of minimalistic timepieces, taking a simplistic approach to even the most complex creations. The Perpetual Calendar is an excellent example of this, where only the most necessary information is shown on the dial, keeping it clean and very much refined.

Back in 2015, H. Moser & Cie took this minimalistic approach to the next level, by releasing the Concept Watch fumé. One look at this watch and you can see that the idea of keeping it simple has been taken to the extreme. So much so, the dial is absent of even brand name and logo, along with the hour indices. The concept of this watch is to evoke emotion first, tell the time second. By leaving everything bare and letting the fumé dial do all the talking, we think they achieve just that.

The Concept Watch fumé was so popular after its initial release in 2015 that H. Moser & Cie officially decided to add it to their Endeavour collection. Since then, the fumé dial has been a symbolic representation of the brand, and its minimalistic approach to watchmaking.

In 2019, blue lagoon, the colour evoking the water of the tropics were combined with the Concept Watch Fumé to create the Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept Blue Lagoon. The blue lagoon colour was an unexpected choice for H. Moser & Cie, which has since its release been a great success. The Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept Blue Lagoon comes in two case variants; solid white or red gold. Both models feature the same movement and dial with only the casing being the difference. The model we were lucky enough to review today is the Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept Blue Lagoon white gold.

This Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept comes with a 40mm 18k white gold casing, which measures at approximately 10.7mm in height. The 18k white gold case is a perfect complement to the overall appearance of the watch as it not only matches the hands but also provides a contrast to the dark tones on the Blue Lagoon fumé dial.

Blue Lagoon fumé dial is the main talking point of this watch and rightly so, as it is stunning to look at. There is also quite a history behind the creation of H. Moser & Cie “fumé” dial. The CEO (Edouard Meylan) of H. Moser & Cie says that the company went looking in the archives for inspiration for a new dial to launch the perpetual calendar in palladium with. In these archives were old fumé dials, which happened to be very trendy almost 50 years ago. The problem was, no one knew how to produce these beautiful dials anymore. To bring it into current production meant that new machines had to be developed along with re-learning how to create the effect of the fumé dial. The result was, of course, the stunning fumé dial pieces produced from 2015 to now.

The Blue Lagoon fumé dial has lighter shades of the blue lagoon colour at the centre that gets darker (to almost complete black) at the edge of the dial. This gradient effect does give a lot of depth to the dial. Not only that, when rotating under light, the Blue Lagoon dial tones can change, making the lighter shades of blue appear more than the darker shades.

The movement used to power the Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept Blue Lagoon is H. Moser & Cie’s 200 automatic calibre. The HMC 200 automatic calibre is the latest edition to the brand’s collection of calibres. As the name suggests, the movement has been designed, developed and produced entirely in-house. Precision Engineering AG, which is the sister company of H. Moser & Cie, has manufactured the regulating organ which is used in this movement. The HMC 200 calibre also houses a large oscillating weight, which has been decorated with Moser’s famous double stripes.

The HMC 200 calibre comes with a frequency of 21, 600 VPH and a hefty power reserve of approximately three days! This latest calibre neatly compliments not only the Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept watch, but also H. Moser & Cie’s extensive range of current movements.

So how does the Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept Blue Lagoon watch wear? Even though the watch comes in a 40mm casing, it sits well on a 6.5inch wrist. The curved lugs sit flush with the wrist ensuring an excellent fit. As the watch is constructed in a way, the dial is spread out, making it look bigger than it is. For a dial like this, that’s what you want, as the blue lagoon fumé dial is gorgeous to look at in person.

The watch comes in hand-stitched grey alligator leather, which helps to provide a contrast to the lighter tones on the dial. Wearing the watch in person really does do the fumé dial justice compared to just looking at images of the watch. This is because when you rotate the watch under light, it gives off a different appearance at every angle, ensuring you never get bored of looking at it!

The Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept Blue Lagoon is the perfect dress watch. You can wear it to the office or almost any formal or semi-formal function, and know that it’ll compliment the outfit nicely while also being a conversation starter.

Keeping it simple is sometimes the best way to go. With the Endeavour Centre Seconds Concept Blue Lagoon, the Schaffhausen manufacture has done just that while having redefined the notion of luxury and human watchmaking. H. Moser & Cie have also proved that a genuine luxury product can be identified immediately, even without a visible logo.
