Introducing The All New Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona

by Sameera Gamage

The Rolex Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is as emblematic as it gets when it comes to the world of watches. What started as a watch inspired by the motor racing world is now an icon thanks to its design and technical performance. Now, to mark the 60th anniversary of the timepiece, Rolex is making sure that the legend continues into the future by updating its entire range.

There has been a number of subtle refinements carried on the details of the Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, even on areas that are characteristic of this model. The Oyster case has been redesigned, with its profile now being highlighted by light reflections on the lugs and case side. On the timepieces in this new collection that have the Cerachrom bezel, the bezel is edged with a thin band that is the same metal material as the case. A total of five models are being released in this new Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona collection. The 40mm case materials in this collection include Oystersteel, a mixture of Oystersteel and yellow gold, the Rolesor version, Everose gold, and lastly 950 platinum. Four of the five variants are offered in an Oyster bracelet. Developed in the 1930’s the Oyster bracelet is one of the most universal in the Oyster Perpetual collection and is known for its robustness.

To match the four different case materials, there are four different dials in this new collection. Firstly we get the standard panda dial for the Oystersteel model, which has a white lacquered dial with black ringed sub-counters. The next model is the Rolesor version (Oystersteel and yellow gold) which is made from 18ct yellow gold with a golden dial and bright black counters. This model has been fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet.

The Oystersteel and yellow gold model gets a yellow gold bezel with matching yellow gold counters on a white lacquer dial. The Oyster bracelet has been modified to have yellow gold center links as well. The last two models to complete the collection is the Everose gold edition and the 950 platinum edition. The beautiful 18ct Everose model comes with a bright black dial and Sundust counters. The last edition to sum up this new Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona collection is the 950 platinum model, characterised by the ice blue dial. This version comes with the monobloc Cerachrom bezel in chestnut brown ceramic. This same chestnut brown is carried over to the sub-counter rings. A stunning model, it is also the only version in this collection to come with an open case back, to admire the all-new movement given to the Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona.

For the first time, the new-generation Cosmograph Daytona comes equipped with the caliber 4131 movements, entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. This movement now uses fewer components for its chronograph function, which thereby increases the movement’s reliability. The movement also comes beautifully decorated with the bridges featuring a Rolex Côtes de Genève decoration, which is different from the traditional Côtes de Genève decoration thanks to the addition of a polished groove between each band. The calibre 4131 movement also uses the patented Chronergy escapement, which brings together high energy efficiency and dependability. With the barrel architecture and the escapement’s efficiency, the movement is able to put out a power reserve of approximately 72 hours.

The new Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona makes subtle changes to one of the most iconic lines in watchmaking, with the biggest change coming with the new movement used and the see-through case back on the 950 platinum model. All models in this collection come with an international five-year guarantee and are covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification.
