Last month, Zenith unveiled its latest edition of the Chronomaster Open. The Chronomaster Open Boutique Edition carries more than just a simple facelift. This new model includes the lines and attributes that make up the latest generation of the Chornomaster collection.
The instantly recognisable El Primero design element that first appeared with the iconic A386 in 1969, the iconic tri-colour dial layout, has now been updated for this Chronomaster Open Boutique Edition. This Chronomaster Open version retains the tri-colour dials with a more transparent twist. The small seconds at 9 o’clock have now been changed from what used to be a cut-out of the dial to show the star-shaped escape wheel to now a transparent sub-dial, thanks to the hesalite crystal element. Against the stunning blue dial, the tri-counter colours stand out very well, thanks to the almost direct contrast.
Zenith has also redesigned the opening for this 9 o’clock subdial. The previous version had an applied frame, whereas now Zenith has opted to use circular openings with chamfered edges while also revealing the movement with more straight bridges in a more contemporary Grey toned colour.
Zenith has also reduced the case size to be slimmer at 39.5mm, compared to the previous models’ 42mm case size. This is in tune with more modern watches, as the industry seems to be making more and more smaller case sizes whilst still retaining the identity of the watch. This new Chronomaster comes with slimmer lugs, more pronounced polished bevels on the edges, and round tips for the pump-style chronograph pushers. The steel bracelet that’s provided has a mix of polished and satin-brushed finishes, which matches the case nicely.
Through the open case back, the El Primero 3604 1/10th of a second automatic chronograph movement can be seen. A modified version of Zenith’s 3600 movements which was first released in the Chronomaster Sport model, the new 3604 calibre movement features an open base plate and bridges, which allow the viewer to have a clear view of the high-frequency 5Hz escapement. The movement gives out a power reserve of approximately 60 hours.
