TAG Heuer Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7 Revealed

by Chamath Gamage

Two brands with unmistakable iconic designs are now being reimagined as one. The all-new Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7 from TAG Heuer is a colourful celebration of the 50th anniversary of Porsche’s 911 Carrera RS 2.7.

In 2021, TAG Heuer and Porsche entered a global partnership that shares and brings together the two brands’ history and values to create special timepieces. Now the fourth instalment from the two brands, TAG Heuer and Porsche, have got together again to create two limited edition timepieces as a tribute to the car brand’s most iconic model and the first to bear the Carrera name.

The two limited edition models being released showcases the signature features of both icons, from the colour schemes and styling of the 1972 sports car to the design cues from the 1963 chronograph.

The first Porsche 911 Carrera was revealed at the Parish Motor show on October 5th, 1972, as the 911 Carrera RS 2.7. This model is still very popular among collectors that can get their hands on one. Porsche produced 1580 models of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 in a range of 27 vivid colour schemes. Two of these colour schemes have been selected by TAG Heuer for this latest collaboration; Indischrot (Guards Red) and Glasurblau (Glazier blue).

Detlev von Platen, member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, states that “The 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was the first 911 to be christened ‘Carrera’ and the crowning glory of the Porsche range at this time. The anniversary of this sportscar icon is the perfect occasion for us to launch a joint watch with our close partner TAG Heuer, with whom we share the same philosophy and love for exclusive products that combine innovation and heritage.”

Both models of this latest collaboration are based on the 42mm TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph with the tri-compax layout. The watch features a 30-minute sub-counter at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour sub-counter at 9 o’clock, and a permanent seconds indicator at 6 o’clock. With the second indicator being blended in with the dial, TAG Heuer was able to also put a date window within this counter without disrupting the appearance or readability of the sub-counter.

The two colour schemes of the models are vastly different from each other. The sporty blue edition, which is limited to 500 pieces, features a smooth white opaline dial with the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock subdials having snailed finish in a combination of blue and white. The inscriptions of the sub-dials, the minute track along with the circular ring along the hour indices are all done in a vivid blue that stands out beautifully against the white background. Blue lacquer has been used for the chronograph seconds hand, the TAG Heuer logo, and the push buttons. The same Carrera writing with the blue stripe that’s found on Porsche’s 911 Carrera RS 2.7 can be found on the side of the watch case as well.

The Sporty blue edition comes in a stainless steel case with two strap options; a sporty fabric strap with the Porsche logo and Carrera Markings or an elegant steel bracelet.

TAG Heuer’s second variant of the Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7 is the sporty red edition, limited to 250 pieces. This model, unlike the blue, is offered in an 18k 5N rose gold polished case, with hour indices, hour and minutes hands being rose gold coloured as well. The red edition essentially has red throughout the dial and watch where the blue lay on the first variant. While the red doesn’t quite have the same stark contrast as the white and blue, it matches well with the rose gold case and finishings on the dial. The red edition is offered with one standard strap only, a red alligator strap with 18k 5N rose gold pin buckle.

Both models come equipped with TAG Heuer’s Calibre Heuer 02 automatic movement. This operates at a frequency of 28 800 VpH (4Hz) while giving a power reserve of approximately 80 hours. The case back is open, showcasing the beauty of the Heuer 02 movement. The case back on both timepieces also feature the engraving “TAG HEUER PORSCHE 911 CARRERA RS 2.7 LIMITED EDITION”.

These two new variants of the Carrera pay great tribute to a Porsche classic. While the stainless steel model can be the everyday model, the 18k rose gold is reserved for the more elegant and classy style. Both editions of the TAG Heuer X Porsche Carrera RS 2.7 is available from October 5th, 2022, from TAG Heuer boutiques, the brand’s e-commerce website, and selected retail partners.

Australian Recommended Retail Price: $10,650 AUD for the blue/steel and $34,100 AUD for the red/rose gold
