Oris has a company with a strong focus on sustainability and it was always been a goal for them to become elite neutral. Yes, it might be a term that is all too simple to proclaim, but perhaps much more difficult to measure and to prove. Because of this, Oris has worked with ClimatePartner, which calculated the carbon footprint of the company and the products, taking into account carbon emissions from activities as diverse as heating the factory and commuting to work.
ClimatePartner has since awarded Oris a certificate confirming that more than 2,500 tonnes of CO2 were offset through their support of the “Clean Oceans” product, run by Plastic Bank, and this has stopped 1 billion bottles from entering the ocean. This might seem like a lot, but it is only a small start, with an estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste in our oceans by National Geographic.
The goal for Oris going forward is to reduce the CO2 emissions by 10% per year every year. Offsetting is a good start, but it is much better to reduce and ultimately avoid creating this emission.
In order to celebrate this milestone, Oris has released the Aquis Date Upcycle, in both 41.5mm and 36.5mm cases, featuring a unique dial made with recycled ocean plastic. The recycling process produces random patterns, meaning no two dials will ever be the same. These pieces won’t be limited editions and they will continue to be produced for as long as there is demand.
Apart from the dial, everything else will be familiar with Aquis territory, a stainless steel case with a clasp extension system, uni-directional rotating bezel with a scratch-resistant ceramic insert. The pieces are powered by the Oris Calibre 733 (Sellita SW200-1) and the presentation boxes are made from sustainable and recyclable paper.
It is always great to see companies taking initiatives to protect the environment and investing in conservation and sustainability projects. Because what good are watches if we don’t have a safe environment to enjoy them in?
