The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Jack Heuer Birthday Gold Limited Edition

by Chamath Gamage

On 19th of November, Jack Heuer celebrated his 88th birthday and to celebrate TAG Heuer released an 18K rose gold limited edition of the recently relaunched TAG Heuer Carerra Chronograph.

Why is this so special?

It all started back in 1963 when Jack Heuer created his first-ever timepiece for the brand. Jack design the watch to the smallest details and registered its name now we all familiar with. Jack Heuer’s favourite piece from the Carerra models was the 1970’s All-gold Heuer Carrera 1158CHN, which is now an Iconic vintage watch and inspired the latest TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Jack Heuer Birthday Gold Limited Edition.

The Carrera was designed for the professional racing drivers that showcase a highly legible and a minimalistic dial. When Jack first heard of the Carrera Panamerica race, the word Carerra resonated deeply. The means’ Race’ and ‘Career’ in Spanish, and it shaped the destiny of a watch that is now a true icon. In the 1970s Jack Heuer started a tradition of presenting Ferrari Formula 1 drivers such as Ronnie Peterson, Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni, an 18K gold Heuer Carrera for good luck. These 1158CHN Carrera models had the drivers name, blood type engraved on the case back and now are highly sought after collectable watches.

Jack Heuer says: “I’m very touched that TAG Heuer reimagined my favourite watch for my birthday. It reminds me of many dear friends and thrilling years on the race track. I will wear it with pride and look forward to seeing it on the wrist of new generations of daring characters as well.”

Fast forward to 2020, some 40 years later, the new limited edition comes in 42mm 18k rose gold casing featuring a silver opaline dial. The stand out features of this watch is the duo of applied stylised infinity loops in the centre of the dial which represent Jack Heuer’s 88th birthday and his infinitely legacy to the brand.

Just like the original 1158CHN Heuer model, the new limited-edition timepiece has two sunray brushed chronograph sub-dials at 3 and 9 o’clock positions; the continuous small second is located at 6 o’clock position which did not exist in the original 1158CHN version. The golden hour markers, hands, and the date display balance out the timepiece perfectly. Offered only in the black alligator strap which bears Jack Heuer’s signature in gold lettering.

The case back displays the Calibre Heuer 02 manufacture movement, which is made of 168 components including a colour wheel and a vertical clutch. This movement produces an impressive 80 hours of power reserve. The Oscillating weight is engraved with Jack’s motto “Time never stops, why should we?” And his signature in gold lettering.

Limited to just 188 pieces worldwide, this beautifully presented Jack Heuer’s birthday edition is going to be a sought after collector’s item.
