You may recall that early on in 2020, Panerai declared that this would be the year of the Luminor. The brand empirically stating that throughout the year, all new releases would be tied to their most iconic model line. Here we are in September of 2020 and true to their word Panerai continue to expand and reinvigorate their Luminor offerings, here with the introduction of the Marina PAM01393.
With the new Luminor Marina 42 mm, the brand revisits a singular and beloved aesthetic that was first established in the 1950s. It was then that Panerai, to meet the growing needs of the Italian Royal Navy, elaborated on the concept of the diving watch, giving life to the Luminor. The model’s name was inspired by a self-luminous substance that had been recently patented by the Florentine brand. Today Super-LumiNova serves the same function.
At the root of its originality is a series of components that are synonymous with the brand: the cushion-shaped 316L steel case, the bridge device designed to protect the crown and the sandwich dial, the last of which is an essential element found in every current generation Luminor Marina.
The latest iteration of the Luminor, the Luminor Marina, features the gorgeous blue satiné soleil dial, complete with white numbers and indices with green luminescence. Regular readers may be familiar with this particular blue dial, and my personal affection for it which can be found in my review of the Luminor Due PAM00926.
The new watch is offered in a more traditionally Panerai size of 42mm, which marks the first time this blue satiné soleil dial has featured in a watch of this size. Panerai seems to be capitalising on the popularity of blue dials and seeking to cover all of its bases, now offering the dial in 38mm, 42mm and 44mm sizes.
Powering the Luminor Marina is the calibre P.9010, an automatic winding, 31 jewel movement with a substantial 3-day power reserve. Made entirely in house the P.9010 movement offers a slew of modern comforts including the brands Glucydur balance, and Incabloc shock proofing device all at just 6mm thick.
The 42mm case is typically Panerai, made from 316L stainless steel, brushed throughout the main case with a high polish bezel for extra pizzazz. The screwed dodecagonal case back also assists in offering the wearer 100 metres of water resistance.
Available on a blue alligator leather strap, the Luminor Marina also comes packaged with an additional blue rubber strap, will be available for purchase soon.
