OMEGA is no stranger when it comes to creating precision timepieces that go further than just keeping time on the surface of the EARTH. The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional aka “The Moonwatch” was first of its kind qualified by NASA for spaceflight. The 42mm instrument worn on the astronaut’s wrist not only kept time in zero gravity but also saved lives of astronauts on the Apollo 13 mission.
In 2020 OMEGA introduces the professional diver watch “OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton Edition” to represent their partnership with Nekton, a not-for-profit research foundation committed to protecting our oceans. Nekton commenced the mission named “First Decent: Indian Ocean” in 2019. The ‘Ocean of the Centre” is home to 2.7 billion people and its conservation and exploration have never been more important in human history then now. Nekton’s agenda: To accelerate the scientific exploration and protection of the ocean by working with and on behalf of ocean nations who are committed to improving the prosperity, resilience, and sustainable governance of their ocean.
Adorning your wrist with such historic timepieces and glancing down to check the time imparts modest satisfaction only in eyes of an astute mind. The Master Chronometer is a stylish and most appropriate way to celebrate OMEGA’s partnership with Nekton. The famous Seamaster has played a key role in OMEGA’s ocean story. A legacy acknowledged by the team at Nekton, who dubbed their research submersible Seamaster 2, in tribute to the boat skippered by the late Sir. Peter Blake. The legendary round-the-world yachtsman was a passionate advocate of ocean conservation and a close friend of OMEGA.
OMEGA has announced two models for the Nekton Edition watches, the only difference in both watches being the strap. The Seamaster Diver has 42mm polished-brushed stainless steel case creating a contrast look. It features a laser-ablated black ceramic [ZrO2] dial, matt finished with polished waves in positive relief, and unidirectional rotating bezel in grade 5 titanium with laser-ablated diving scale. As a tribute to the hard-working foundation, the oriented case back features an embossed Nekton submarine medallion and is engraved with NAIADLOCK, DIVER 300M and the watch’s water resistance.
The diving case is water-resistant to 300meters or 1000ft and at these depths, the helium gas particles diffuse into the watch, hence the watch features the helium escape valve at 10 o’clock. The helium escape valve and the screw-in crown are both polished.
The first watch has an integrated rubber strap with polished-brushed buckle to compliment the black ceramic dial. The rubber straps are convenient when diving. The second version comes with a stainless-steel bracelet which gives the watch a dressier look.
Driving the Nekton Edition is the Master Chronometer Calibre 8806. A self-winding movement with a Co-Axial escapement. The movement is a Certified Master Chronometer, certified by METAS and it can resist magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss and has a power reserve of 55 hours. OMEGA has opted for a free-sprung system which gives better accuracy and uses a silicon hairspring adding to the movements anti-magnetic feature. The watch rotor and bridges are rhodium plated and the case back features Geneva waves in arabesque. Finally, the crystal is domed and scratch-resistant sapphire with anti-reflective treatment on both sides to improve readability.
OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton Edition will not be a limited-edition watch. This offering from OMEGA will go a long way in supporting a very noble cause. We all need to do our bit to save the environment and purchasing this timepiece will play a part in the protection of our world’s oceans.
