In the watch world, less can often mean more — but a balance between less and more still needs to be struck. Perhaps no one knows this better than Baume et Mercier, who strike that balance once more with a new iteration of the Hampton.

With quiet luxury becoming more of the norm these days, watch brands across the globe have been eager to jump on the trend. Not that this is a bad thing, mind you — I, for one, am glad we’ve finally moved past the oversized, maximalist design phase of the 2010s. But there’s been an increasing disconnect around what quiet luxury actually is. It isn’t about phoning in a design and coating it in gold, nor is it about stripping away every detail until there’s nothing fun or interesting left. True quiet luxury is about striking the perfect balance between less and more — refined, intentional, and effortlessly elegant.

Baume et Mercier know this all too well. Since 1830, the Genevan brand has adopted Φ (Phi) as its calling card. This symbol not only represents the Golden Ratio — the mathematical principle found in natural beauty — but also signifies the brand’s pursuit of balance through elegance and artistic sensibility. At Baume et Mercier, the role of a watch designer is not unlike that of an architect or engineer. Nearly every day, they’re tasked with the near-impossible: to evoke natural beauty within a timepiece without compromising its structural integrity. While this uncompromising pursuit of perfection means many concepts never see the light of day, it also ensures that those which do are nothing short of extraordinary.

At 22.2mm wide, 35mm long, and 6.92mm thick, the new Hampton model is an elegant timepiece perfect for small wrists, or the elegant female watch lover.

The Hampton collection, which debuted in 1994, is one of the best examples of this philosophy. Representing the very best of ‘less is more’ watchmaking, its classic yet contemporary design quickly earned it a permanent spot in the Baume et Mercier lineup. That doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon, as Watches and Wonders 2025 has prompted the brand to further evolve the collection to meet the needs of the modern watch wearer.

This latest Hampton model, measuring 22.2mm wide and 35mm long, is clearly aimed at those with smaller wrists—particularly within the female market. A slender steel watch measuring just 6.92mm thick, it’s a masterclass in minimalism and contrast. Its distinctive rectangular silhouette is refined yet striking, gently curving to follow the contours of the wrist. The case is topped off with a cabochon crown, adorned with a synthetic blue spinel for a subtle but sophisticated flourish.

The Baume et Mercier Hampton strips back more features than before, yet still feels cohesive in design.

As opposed to the ‘square within a square’ dial design of previous models, this new Hampton reference introduces a unified silvery opaline dial that serves as a sleek, minimalist backdrop for a bold yet balanced display. The simplicity of the dial beautifully highlights the rhodium-plated Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 o’clock, riveted rhodium-plated indexes, blue ‘glaive’ hands, and a subtle gray minute track. My personal favourite detail, however, is the minute track itself. Instead of a traditional railroad layout, Baume et Mercier opted for a series of gray trapezoids — an elegant twist that adds visual interest and slightly boosts legibility for those who prefer precise time-telling.

Speaking of precision, Baume et Mercier have long treated accurate timekeeping not just as a promise, but as a core philosophy — and the Hampton lives up to that. Housed within the slender case is a quartz movement, a modern and pragmatic choice that enhances accuracy while reinforcing the collection’s value proposition.

My Thoughts

More often than not, I find myself disheartened that Baume et Mercier tends to get lost in the shuffle among other watch brands of similar calibre. Given their heritage and iconic designs, I believe their time in the spotlight is long overdue — with Baume et Mercier’s presence in the modern watch conversation is more than warranted.

That said, Baume et Mercier’s brand philosophy has never been about shouting for attention. They’ve always taken pride in working quietly in the background, inviting watch lovers to discover their pieces at their own pace — only to realise later just how much they’ve been missing out. This latest Hampton release is yet another embodiment of that ethos, though ironically, it makes the brand even harder to ignore. With refined offerings like this, alongside the new Riviera chronograph releases, Baume et Mercier may soon find themselves in a fascinating, almost paradoxical position: a recognisable name in the world of quiet luxury.
