April 2020, Vacheron Constantin have enriched their Overseas collection. Our standout piece from this collection is the Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin Skeleton. This model is at the heart of mechanical intricacies as it features an open-work movement featuring a perpetual calendar. As the name already suggests, this latest model is also ultra-thin, coming in at an 8.1mm case thickness!
The Overseas Skeleton Perpetual Calendar watch comes in the form of precious metal (18k) with a 5N all gold version available as well. With so many different aspects of this watch, it’s daring just as it is beautiful.
Vacheron Constantin’s self-winding calibre 1120 QPSQ is joining the Overseas collection but in a completely new look. The movement is now entirely open-worked, showcasing a mesmerising level of detail and depth, revealing the heart of the movement underneath the sapphire crystal. The case-back is also transparent, which itself is showmanship to the skeletonisation of a watch. The case-back reveals the gear trains and the NAC-treated oscillating weight, which includes a 22k gold piece. For Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas collection, the oscillating weight has also been open-worked, and now features a very stylish design of a Maltese cross. What the open-work oscillating weight also does is not get in the way of seeing the incredible movement in the back.
The movement has an extraordinary finishing, all done entirely by hand, to achieve a level of aesthetic perfection. The calibre 1120 QPSQ movement is as Vacheron Constantin has put it “complexity transcending the complication itself”. While other watches with calendars indicating the day, date and month require adjustments according to the months with 28, 29 and 30 days, the Overseas Skeleton Perpetual Calendar requires no intervention until March 1st, 2100!. This includes not requiring any adjustments for the calendar indications and the moon phases. Vacheron Constantin creating a movement like this on an ultra-slim watch while at the same time only housing 276 components is an engineering feat in the watchmaking industry.
To suit varied personal tastes, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Skeleton Perpetual Calendar comes with the freedom to be able to personalise your watch. Like the other models in the Oversea’s collection, the timepiece is available in different bracelet/strap options, with a secure and convenient interchangeability system. The Overseas Skeleton Perpetual Calendar comes fitted with a gold bracelet, where the satin-brushed links represent a half Maltese cross-shape. The timepiece also comes with two additional straps, in blue rubber and blue alligator. The blue rubber can work exceptionally well as it neatly matches the various blues found throughout the dial.
It’s tough, to sum up, such an inspiring and beautiful timepiece in a few words. Vacheron Constantin has put it best by stating “the Overseas Skeleton Perpetual Calendar watch perpetuates the travel-driven spirit of the collection and combines the refinement of precious metal with the nobility of its ultra-thin open-worked complication movement. It highlights the expression of Haute Horlogerie values.”
