The new TAG Heuer Autavia Isograph

by Chamath Gamage

Considered as the first of the TAG Heuer’s “big three” watches, the new Autavia Isograph brings a classic timepiece belonging to the automobile and aviation industry, into the modern world. Originally released in the 1960’s, the Autavia watches have been known to be reliable while having an appeal of ruggedness and versatility. This is a revolutionary timepiece by TAG Heuer as they modernised the Autavia with the all new proprietary oscillator with its carbon composite hairspring.

Balance wheel and hairspring

Being an icon in the TAG Heuer watch collection, Autavia has finally been given its own line of models to join the likes of the Carrera, Formula 1, Monaco, Aquaracer and Link ranges. The Autavia collection will have seven different models that will be manufactured with the combination of the calibre and composite hairspring, while having the design cues of an  adventurous and daring spirit.

This Autavia Isograph has a beautiful smokey dark blue dial with contrasting rhodium plated indexes that comes together very nicely on a 42mm case. This model features the rounded  Autavia case with the bevelled lugs that was present on the original model from the 1960’s. The bi-directional 60 minute scale rotating bezel with the blue ceramic steel insert makes this watch look much sportier.

TAG Heuer has opted to go for a blue/white colour scheme on the dial and the bezel which does make the watch beautiful to look at. Combined with the smokey dark blue dial with the matching blue on the bezel, the white indexes, hour, minute and second hands gives the Autavia Isograph a nice colour contrast. With this blue-white colour contrast, readability of the watch has become easier. TAG Heuer has also added Superluminova onto the hour indexes, hour, minute and second hands to make night time readability more clearer. TAG Heuer have used an extra large crown with their signature logo, which was a design cue taken from pilot watches/timers as this makes adjusting the time easier when gloves are worn.

Autavia Isograph is powered by TAG Heuer’s Swiss made Isograph movement; the Calibre 5. The automatic system powers the functions of hours, minutes, seconds and date, while having a power reserve of approximately 38hours. The Autavia Isograph also includes a tailor-made balance wheel use for the high precision chronometer.

The original Autavia from the 1960’s was known for using the latest materials and technology. This modern day Autavia range released by Tag Heuer is no different. Tag Heuer’s latest cutting-edge design with the carbon composite hairspring has been implemented into all seven of the new Autavia models. As the hairspring is known to be the heart of a mechanical watch, Tag Heuer took creating this new component very seriously by having a team of dedicated mathematicians, physicists and chemists work tirelessly to bring this innovative design to live. The end product was a new carbon composite hairspring that is virtually unaffected by gravity and shock while being completely anti-magnetic. A true masterpiece design that has shaken up the traditional watch making industry.

TAG Heuer Autavia can be suitable for almost any style or event. The watch comes with three strap variations; brown leather, stainless steel and NATO strap. The NATO strap comes included if the watch is bought with the stainless steel option. With the availability of these straps, the TAG Heuer Autavia is very versatile. For a much classier and formal event the stainless steel bracelet would be the go to. For the more casual, office-wear or sporty occasion, the brown leather or NATO strap can be worn.
