Bringing Back The Spirit Of The 1960s With The All-New Glashütte Original Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition.

by Sameera Gamage

The 1960s was an unforgettable decade when a lot of characteristic and iconic timepieces were born. The unveiling of Glashütte Original’s Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition is a celebration of this historic period in time.

During this decade, the younger generation took center stage and made themselves heard worldwide. Fashion during the 1960’s was full of contrast, ranging from the clean lines and dark colours of the Beat generation to the colourful, opulent flower power look. Clothing is very much a form of self expression, and the 1960s proved just how much so.

Timepiece’s are another form of self-expression. It shows our own personal taste in watches, from the colours we like to the type of watch and brands we support. Glashütte Original’s latest timepiece is a testament to this, with the watch bringing about different colours and textures which define the look of this year’s edition of the Sixties Chronograph. The 1960s core theme of wanting to stand is displayed in a more subtle yet aesthetic way on the dial of the Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition.

The previous version of the Sixties chronograph comes with a silver or black coloured dial with rhodium plated hands and indices for the black dial and golden hands and indices for the silver version. Both versions carry the same design characteristics as this new edition, with the constant seconds counter at 3 o’clock and 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock. To mimick iconic designs of the Sixties, Glashütte Original has used a more flamboyant typeface for the 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock hour markers.

The beautifully polished 42mm stainless steel case of this new Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition, perfectly contrasts and complements the colours of the dial. The dial starts off with a shimmering grey tone in the centre, which then gradually fades into a more darker almost black tone towards the edge of the dial, producing a dégradé effect. The dial is also finely embossed using original tools and methods of the time. Two white Arabic numerals are complemented by incised hour markers that have luminous dots and red gold hands.

The hour and minute hands, constant seconds hand and sub-dial hands are all done in red gold to match with the hour indices and provide a aesthetically balanced look. The embossing of the dial gives this timepiece a very unique look, making it stand out from the crowd. Very much in-tune with the 1960s theme.

Beating inside this new Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition is Glashütte Original’s 39-34 automatic movement. This self-winding movement comes with a swan-neck fine adjustment, which means that the regulation can be fine tuned for when the beat rate has been fixed, the regulator will stay in its place. The 39-34 movement is able to operate at a high-frequency of 4hz (28, 800 VpH) and gives out a approximate power reserve of 40 hours. Thanks to the open case back, the aesthetics of this movement can be seen. Decorated artfully by hand, the 39-34 automatic movement comes with the Glashütte stripe finish, bevelled edges, polished small screws and a skeletonised oscillating weight made of 21-carat gold with the characteristic double-G symbol.

Glashütte Original has supplied the Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition with a dark blue synthetic strap with pink buckle as the standard choice. Ideally suited for outdoor wear, the dark blue strap also gives a nice contrast to the overall appearance of the timepiece, making the aesthetic dial stand out further. The stone grey dial with it’s dégradé effect and historic embossing, is the central feature of this new model, as it celebrates the lifestyle of the Sixties with its refined, contrasting design.
