As part of the 55th Anniversary celebrations for the Seiko 5 Sports, the brand has unveiled a new limited edition timepiece dedicated to one of the world’s most-produced motorcycles of all time.
This all-new creation has been inspired by the Super Cub, a colourful motorcycle first introduced in 1958. Created by the Motorcycle giant Honda, the Super Cub has become one of the brand’s most repersentative creations. The Super Cub stands at being one of the most produced motorcycles worldwide, with in 2017, the cumulative production of the series exceeded 100 million units.
The design of the new Seiko 5 Sports Limited Edition showcases the first-generation Super Cub’s design from 1958, from the colour’s used to the silhouette of the motorcycle being depicted on the dial. Seiko has gone the extra length to make this dedication as visually aesthetic and synonymous as possible.
The 42.5mm stainless steel case with the 5 Sports iconic crown placement at 4 o’clock comes with a uni direction rotating bezel with knurled edges for easy rotation. The crown comes with a special engraving, a wing mark, which is a reference to the first-generation Super Cub. The bezel is colour themed blue and light blue, reflecting the colour scheme of the Super Cub.
Seiko has designed the dial very careful to depict a silhouette of the Super Cub, or front view of the motorcycle. The main headlight can be see at the 12 o’clock hour marker, with two orange “indicators” at 1 and 11 o’clock hour markers. The front view of the motorcycle is then outlined through the dark blue and light blue shades on the dial. At 6 o’clock, we get the inscription “Cub” showing the watch’s reference to the motorcycle.
A large day-date window is also located at 3 o’clock, which blends in quite nicely with the rest of the hour indices thanks to the white Superlumi-Nova. Lastly, the seconds hand is coated in orange, which not only adds a stand-out colour to the dial, but it also nicely matches with the “indicators” at the top of the dial.
As this is a dedicated sports timepiece with inspiration coming from the automotive industry, Seiko has offered a nylon strap as standard, The strap is not only beautifully decorated with navy and light blue vertical straps to match the colours of the dial, but also features the Honda Super Cub logo and the “Wing Mark”.
The movement inside is the brand’s 4R36 calibre, which is not only reliable, but has been in Seiko’s manufacture since 2011. The 4R36 calibre movement is able to power the watch for approximately 40 hours, while working at a frequency of 21,600 VpH (3Hz). The case back of the timepiece is partrially opened. While you can technically see the movement underneath, the red tint along with the Super Cub emblem does obscure visibility. With the model being limited to just 7500 units, each one will come individually numbered, with this serial number being found on the case back.
Seiko’s latest 5 Sports is a colourful celebration of not only the 55th Anniversary of the model but also the widely popular Super Cub motorcycle. While the model can certainly be paired with the standard stainless steel bracelet to give it a more classier look, nato strap does the watch justice by matching the dial colours and enhancing the timepiece’s sporty look. The Seiko 5 Sports 55th Anniversary Super Cub limited edition will be available in September, and as mentioned previously, is limited to a number of 7500 models.
