Innovation and sustainability have come together to create a watch no one would’ve thought to be possible. For the first time, Hublot and Nespresso have come together to create the first watch made from recycled Nespresso coffee grounds and capsules.
This certainly is one cool watch, not just because of the material used to create it, but also for the beautiful shade of green that’s been produced. The Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin brings forth innovation, excellence, and sustainability, core values that are shared by both brands. Besides the movement, almost every part of this watch has been redesigned with coffee grounds and capsules.
The recycled coffee grounds from the capsules are made into two watch straps. The first is a rubber version, while the second is a velcro fabric version. The velcro fabric version was made with Hublot collaborating with SingTex, which is one of Nespresso’s partners that are already using recycled coffee grounds to produce a fabric called Scafé.
How Hublot has managed to form coffee grounds into watch straps is anyone’s guess. Approximately 4.1 percent coffee grounds and 8.2 percent recycled white rubber is used to make the rubber strap. The fabric strap however is made from 5 percent coffee grounds and 95 percent recycled polyester.
The Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin comes with a 42mm case, which like the straps is anything but ordinary. The case, bezel, crown, and pushers are all made from recycled aluminum. For this case, approximately 28% of the aluminium composite is made from Nespresso coffee capsules. This material composite is then put through an anodizing process which gives the stunning Hublot/Nespresso green colour. The case is then satin finished and polished to add a nice shine to an already impressive case.
Hublot has their calibre HUB1280 movement which is the openwork automatic chronograph movement. With a constant seconds counter at 9 o’clock, and a 60-minute counter (with integrated date window) at 3 o’clock, the movement is able to put out a power reserve of 72 hours. The case back is open as you would expect, and it shows a pretty image of the architecture of this movement.
While the green is continued into the elements of the dial, a generous amount of Superlumi-Nova is used for the hour indices and hands. This also aids in the readability of the dial thanks to the slight contrast of white against the green. A neat little detail and a reference to Nespresso is the brand’s “N” logo on the crown.
This watch was made to grab attention. And once it’s there, what a story it tells. Imagine hearing that this watch is made from coffee ground beans. It’s a surefire way to get a “you’re joking” type reaction! The colour green is also the perfect choice, as this watch is all about being sustainable and as environmentally friendly as possible.
