It was only a few months ago that TAG Heuer released one of the most anticipated Monaco limited edition models, the DARK LORD. Watchadvice did a brief snippet into this stunning all-black piece, which you can find here (https://www.watchadvice.com.au/11455/2022-tag-heuer-monaco-special-edition-revealed/)
Now, TAG Heuer is unveiling another limited edition model of iconic Monaco, released in a total of 500 pieces. The Monaco Purple Dial Limited edition.
While the previous version saw this model get a completely black look with hints of colour, this new interpretation of the famed racing chronograph sees a bold new look, with a stunning new dial that’s beaming with colour.
The watch is presented in a 39mm square case in fine-brushed and polished steel. The main attraction is, of course, the purple steel dial with a sunray finish. The dial has a lighter purple finish in the centre, gradually turning to a darker purple on the edges of the dial.
Although this dial finish has never been seen before as an original on Monaco, there have been past versions of the Monaco that showed a similar colour through the patina.
Early references of the Heuer Monaco, such as reference 1113B (1969 Chronomatic version) and reference 1533 Calibre 15, had a dial finish consisting of metallic blue paint over a brass plate. Over time, this blue will patinate to a dégradé purple colour, with a light shade on the centre of the dial and darker on the edges.
Watchadvice’s thoughts:
This latest interpretation of the famed Monaco model is in stark contrast to the recently released Dark Lord Monaco edition. The rich purple dial is stunning to look at while also being a contrasting backdrop to the hour indices and hands. Where the hour markers lie is on the darker purple hue of the dial, making the markers stand out nicely. Also, as standard, Monaco comes with two sub-counters at 3 and 9 o’clock, which have black backgrounds for easy legibility.
TAG Heuer’s in-house calibre Heuer 02 can be seen from the case back as well, with the oscillating mass being hollowed out to have more visibility of the movement. In keeping with the colour theme, the movement also shows purple details. On the case back the individual unit number/500 can be found at the 12 o’clock position.
The standard strap that is provided with this model is a black alligator leather strap with a purple lining, which as an overall visual look, allows the dial to take centre stage. Overall this is a beautiful timepiece with the stunning sunray purple dial that works well with its surrounding elements (rhodium hands/indices and steel case). It’s safe to say not only Monaco enthusiasts but watch fanatics, in general, will be keeping a close eye on this one. But don’t wait too long, as there are only 500 models!
